Discover Yala National Park

Stretching along Sri Lanka's southeastern coastline, Yala National Park (Ruhuna) is a world-renowned wildlife frontier where dry thorny scrublands, colossal rocky monadnocks, and brackish coastal lagoons create the perfect habitat for big cats. Recognized by zoologists as boasting the highest density of wild leopards in the world, Yala offers one of the premier big-game safari experiences in all of Asia.

In Pursuit of the Ceylon Leopard & Sloth Bear

The apex predator of the park is the Panthera pardus kotiya (Sri Lankan Leopard), a distinct subspecies that exhibits unique, confident daytime behavior due to the absence of competing apex predators like lions or tigers. Morning game drives frequently reveal leopards lounging across massive granite boulders or prowling along sandy jeep tracks.

Yala is equally famous for the shaggy, termite-eating Sloth Bear, especially during the fruiting season of palu trees in May and June. Add magnificent herds of Asian elephants, wild water buffalo, spotted deer, and over two hundred species of resident and migratory waterfowl, and Yala becomes an unmissable highlight for any nature lover.
