During the dry months between July and October, Minneriya National Park becomes the stage for one of nature's most awe-inspiring wildlife phenomena: The Great Elephant Gathering. Built in the 3rd century by King Mahasen, the colossal Minneriya reservoir gradually recedes, exposing fertile grasslands that draw upwards of 300 wild elephants from across the region to graze, socialize, and bathe.
