Waikkal | Mihintale| Ritigala | Dambulla
Breakfast at the hotel and transfer from Waikkal to Mihintale. (Approx. 4 Hrs drive) Mihintale is where Buddhism was first introduced to Sri Lanka. Mihintale is regarded as the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. The rock is riddled with shrines and rock dwellings. A grand stairway of 1,840 steps made out of granite slabs 15'' wide leads to the summit from where one could get a splendid view of the surrounding countryside. On completion, transfer to Dambulla. Enroute visit Ritigala (Approx. 1 Hrs and 40 Minutes’ drive to Dambulla). Ritigala is a mountain in central Sri Lanka which is home to an ancient Buddhist monastery. The ruins and rock inscriptions of the monastery date back to the 1st century BCE. Ritigala mountain consists of four peaks which rise steeply from the surrounding plain. The mountain is 6.5 km in length, and divided into northern and southern blocks by Maha-Degala Gorge. The highest peak is Ritigala Kanda in the southern block. At 766 m (2,513 ft) above sea level, and 600 m (2,000 ft) above the surrounding plains, Ritigala is the highest mountain in northern Sri Lanka. Transfer to Dambulla and check-in at the hotel. Pidurangala
Breakfast at the hotel and leave for Pidurangala. Advisable to visit the Rock before the Breakfast to witness the Sunrise. (Approx. 30 Mins) This rock has a much more natural feel, despite also housing a Buddhist temple. Pidurangala Rock is adjacent to Sigiriya Rock and is the best viewing spot of Sigiriya Rock as it is only slightly lower. Pidurangala is a popular spot for sunrise as you can enjoy 360-degree views of not only the valleys but also Sigiriya Rock. It is believed that the history of the temple at Pidurangala goes back beyond to the first and second century BC. From those days Pidurangala was used as a Buddhist monastery but became a prominent place during the reign of King Kashyapa (473 – 495 AC). According to ancient chronicles, Prince Kashyapa had killed his father King Dhatusena and fled to Sigiriya to find out a more secure place to prevent retaliation attacks from his half-brother, Mugalan. With the arrival of King Kashyapa, the Bhikkus who meditated there were requested to move to the nearby Pidurangala. As compensation, King Kashyapa refurbished the temple. Breakfast at the hotel. Proceed to High Knuckles Trek (Lunch will be provided). Hitting the summit of the first two knuckles is your goal! Knuckles range also called Dumbara mountain range is located off Kandy, in the northern end of Central Highlands of Sri Lanka. To the south and east of the mountain range is Mahaweli river basin while to the west are Matale plains. The Knuckles range is one of the loveliest nature attractions of Sri Lanka.
